Alan Watts - Nothingness

Beautiful, and transcendent.

Alan Watts is one of my favourite 20th century philosophers. His wisdom is timeless, and I think it's a sign of the malaise of our era that he's become something of an internet phenomenon, almost 40 years after his death in 1973. More and more people are embarking on a journey to reconnect with their true selves, as they try to discover their place in the universe. Watts offered a road map of meaning for those with the courage to follow, where they will find that the journey is the destination.

I heartily recommend this excellent two-part documentary series from the BBC about the universe, our attempts over the centuries to understand it, and our place in it.

Presented by Professor Jim Al-Khalili, Professor of Theoretical Physics and Chair in the Public Engagement in Science at the University of Surrey, the two films, epic in scope and often wonderfully surreal in style, take the viewer on a profound exploration of the true size and shape of the universe, and delve into the amazing science behind apparent nothingness.

Top notch filmmaking - a tone poem about both the wonders and the never-ending mysteries of existence.
